It just got easier to see performances at the Joyce Theater. On Tuesday the Joyce announced two new initiatives designed to improve access to its programming.
The JoycePass gives registered dance professionals the opportunity to buy $10 tickets to any performance this season. The Pay What You Decide initiative invites patrons to watch selected shows and then decide what they would like to pay.
Linda Shelton, the Joyce’s executive director, said both initiatives were meant to remove barriers that might keep viewers away. “They’re both about accessibility but they’re targeted at two different audiences,” she said by phone.
Ms. Shelton said the JoycePass was created to respond to dancers’ needs. The Joyce already has $10 tickets, but “they’re on a first-come-first-served basis and they sell out quickly,” she said. “Working dancers can’t always make it. They don’t know their rehearsal schedules. They can’t plan far enough out.” She added that administrators and other dance professionals also needed flexibility and were therefore included in the program.
